When it comes to replacing your heating unit, what do you know about the differences between electric and gas heaters? If you know only that they are powered by different sources, then you are like most people.

The fact is that gas and electric HVAC systems differ in everything from their use of air ducts to their efficiency to their costs and energy usage. Each type of system has its pros and cons, so it’s important to know what you want from your HVAC system, and what you are willing to compromise on.

Let’s take a look at some unknown truths about gas and electric HVAC to help you make the best decision for your home.

Your Duct System

More often than not, a central air system includes a system of air ducts that supply warm air to different rooms of the house and return cold air to the unit to be warmed.

Both gas and electric units make use of air ducts, but while there is no central gas heater that can work without ducts, there is are ductless electric systems that work well in cases where air ducts are not already present, as in a new addition. Ductless air heating is a smart alternative to installing ductwork, as duct installation can prove to be a costly job.

Heating Efficiency

If you are looking for the most efficient heater, you’ll want to go with a gas system. It is well known that natural gas is a more efficient power source than electricity is.

Evidence of this can be seen in household water heaters, gas stoves and ovens, and in gas hearing!

Warming air faster, while working less, means less wear and tear on your unit, which means a longer life expectancy.

A Heater’s Cost

The cost of an HVAC system has two parts: the initial investment to purchase and install the unit, and the month-to-month cost of operation.

When it comes to electric versus gas, electric heaters usually have a lower initial cost, because they are easier to install and maintain than gas units are.

As far as month-to-month, the price of electricity does not change on a monthly basis, so you’ll always have an idea of how much your electric bill will be. Gas prices, however, are far more fluid, and can change from one month to the next; so gas may be less expensive than electricity one month, but it may be more expensive the next.

Energy Usage

Because natural gas heating is more efficient than electric, they also tend to use up less energy.

Aside from that fact, natural gas is a more environmentally friendly energy source than electricity.

If you are interested in making your home more “green,” then gas may be a good choice for you. Still not sure which HVAC system is best for your home?
